Mechanisms of ecosystem change in the Western Channel

Looe Bioblitz 2013

The annual coastal and marine Bioblitz organised by the Marine Biological Association and Cornwall Wildlife Trust will take place from 23-24 June 2013 in Looe, Cornwall.

A Bioblitz is a 24-hour survey of a natural space to try and identify and record as many species as possible, and to raise public awareness of biodiversity. Bioblitzes are great fun – there will be wildlife activities for everyone with experts on hand to help and a range of activities will be running throughout the event.

Surveying will begin at midday on Sunday 23rd and finish at midday on Monday the 24th. The grand total will be announced at 14:00. We hope to record in excess of 1,000 species.

We now have a Facebook event page. Please check it out for regular updates.

If you are interested in taking part as a volunteer or partner, please contact events@mba.ac.uk or 01752 633336.

Last year’s report can be found here.

We are pleased to announce that we have finally sorted some accommodation out for the upcoming Bioblitz!

Camping will be available at the Tencreek Holiday Park in Looe, which is about 5mins drive/half an hour walk from basecamp at Millpool.

Tencreek have been very supportive and offered us half price camping in the meadow (£7 per night for 2 people sharing a tent) for Saturday 23rd and Sunday 24th.  Anyone interested in camping either or both nights can book directly with Tencreek online  or via phone (01503 262447).

For online booking – you need to select the ‘Meadows’ camping area and type the discount  word (please contact events@mba.ac.uk for this)  in order to get the discounted rate.

The Bioblitz is taking place as part of the Interreg funded Marinexus project, and of the British Ecological Society’s Festival of Ecology a public-focused nationwide celebration of ecological science.

We have also been fortunate enough to receive a generous grant from Sea Changers, which will allow us to run snorkel survey sessions throughout the event for anyone interested in getting involved. Further details will be posted soon, but contact us for more information.

We gratefully acknowledge the support of all our funders - see below for a full list.

The event is supported by the British Ecological Society, the UK’s academic learned society supporting the science of ecology. During 2013 the British Ecological Society will be celebrating its centenary with a series of events, conferences and publications that aim to increase the profile of ecological science among scientists and the public. This event is part of the Festival of Ecology, a public focused nationwide celebration of ecological science with over sixty participating institutions across the UK. The Festival will run from 15 June – 4 August 2013.
